When the news first broke I went from being my normal realistic, well-travelled self of "Nah, it'll be fine," to thinking last week "Oh no! I might have to rearrange my plans," back to my happier "Nah, it'll be fine," state.
If you haven't heard the latest, nobody knows how many people have actually died of swine flu, but it's dropped from 160 down to 100, down to 9, back up to 19, down to 9 again and now apparently 22. The spread of the flu peaked between April 23-28 and the word is all will probably be ok. Which doesn't mean we were wrong to be concerned - imagine if everyone had been blase and then it had been like 1968 all over again (1 million dead from Hong Kong flu). But it's nice to know I can still plan to live beyond the age of 27.
The final thing that cracked me up about my whole trip (2 months away - cannot wait) is that on day 3 of the swine flu outbreak, I checked the Intrepid website and someone had cancelled their booking for the tour that I am doing which starts in Mexico on July 25 before taking in Belize and Guatemala. Surely if you are the sort of person that plans a trip to exciting, beautiful and chaotic countries like these, you are also not the sort of person to cancel a trip at the first whiff of trouble. Shame on that person for cancelling! Hope they weren't hot.....
